Overview
- Basic education includes pre-school education, primary education, and secondary education (Kan).
- Secondary education lasts around 6 years (Kan).
- Those who complete junior middle school must take an entrance exam which will give them the option to continue to an academic senior middle school, enter a vocational middle school, or leave school altogether (Kan).
- After graduation, students must take the National Higher Education Entrance Exam (Gao Kao) if they wish to continue to a university (Kan).
- Fierce competitiveness surrounding the Gao Kao results in several schools offering extra morning classes in subjects such as math and science on Saturdays
- If schools don't provide this option, many parents will send their children to cram school or set up one-to-one private tuition (Kan).
